kernel-common software package provides common elements for generated kernel packages, you can install in your Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install kernel-common
kernel-common is installed in your system.
Make ensure the kernel-common package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep kernel-common *
You will get with kernel-common package name, version, architecture and description in a table
